THE Ekiti State Police Command has dismissed a Sergeant, Osayingbemi Temitope, over his involvement in an incident linked to illicit drug use.
Temitope was captured in a viral video acting erratically in Asin Ekiti, Ikole Local Council, allegedly under the influence of an illicit substance.
The footage showed the officer holding and embracing a bench in an unusual manner, while rolling on the floor, which attracted the attention of passersby and residents, who gathered at the scene.
The incident had generated public concern, with many calling for a prompt and transparent investigation and psychological monitoring of Police officers.
The Command’s spokesperson, Sunday Abutu (SP), in a statement he issued in Ado-Ekiti on Friday, May 15, recalled that the officer was captured in a viral video “behaving erratically” in Ikole-Ekiti on May 9 after allegedly consuming illicit substances.
Abutu stated that Temitope was immediately subjected to medical and psychological evaluations, as well as internal disciplinary procedures, adding that psychological evaluations confirmed that he was emotionally stable, while medical test revealled traces of tobacco and amphetamine in his system.
He explained that during further enquiries, the officer confessed to having taken some illicit drugs, and disciplinary procedures were taken and the officer was found culpable of misconduct, adding: “He was recommended for dismissal, and the recommendation was upheld. The Command hereby confirms his dismissal with immediate effect.”
Abutu stated that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) remained a disciplined organisation that would not condone acts of indiscipline, unprofessional conduct or any behaviour capable of tarnishing its image.
He said the state Commissioner of Police, Falade Michael, had charged officers and men of the Command to uphold discipline, professionalism, accountability and integrity in the discharge of their duties.
