Police Nab Two Over Nursing Student’s Rape, Beheading

OPERATIVES of the Imo State Police Command have arrested two men for allegedly raping and beheading a female nursing student in Umulogho, a community in Obowo Local Council, Wendy Achumba.
The decapitated body of Achumba, a student of the College of Nursing Sciences in Umuadara village in the Umulogho Community, who hailed from Abia State, was discover on Thursday evening, May 21, in her hostel room in the Umulogho Community.
She was said to have completed her midwifery programme and was undergoing post-basic training at the institution.
Spokesperson of the Command, Henry Okoye (DSP), in a statement on Sunday, May 24, identified the suspects as Onyema Okonkwo, 32, and Emmanuel Onyekachi, 25, both from Umuadara village in the Umulogho Community.
Okoye did not, however, mention when the suspects were arrested, but stated that they were apprehended following sustained, intelligence-led investigative efforts by the Police, in collaboration with some community members, adding that one of the suspects- Okonkwo- confessed that he raped and then killed the 21-year-old nursing student.
According to the Police spokesman: “During the investigation, Onyema Okonkwo confessed to killing the victim to conceal his crime after forcibly having unlawful carnal knowledge of her on multiple occasions.
“He further implicated Emmanuel Onyekachi as being involved in the matter.
“The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet and comprehensive investigation and will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.”
It was gathered that the suspects were arrested at separate locations in Umulogho Community on Saturday, May 23, by youths of the community who handed them over to the Police.
Okoye stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, has assured Nigerians that the matter was being handled with “utmost diligence and professionalism” and anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Okonkwo was seen in a trending video clips confessing to some community youths in Igbo language that he and Onyekachi stormed Achumba’s hostel about 7p.m., and initially asked the victim to have sex with him, but she declined and that his first attempt to rape her forced the victim to scratch him violently.
In another clip, he said he and Onyekachi later overpowered Achumba and took turns to rape her before Onyekachi allegedly cut off her head with a machete.
