EFCC Chairman Blames ‘Lazy, Greedy’ Youths For Rising Cybercrime.

Published:

CHAIRMAN of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has blamed laziness and greed among Nigerian youths for the growing rate of cybercrime in the country, warning that the quest for quick wealth continues to ruin lives and reputations.
Olukoyede lamented that many young people now see Internet fraud as a shortcut to success, rather than pursuing legitimate means of income through hardwork, perseverance and dedication.
Speaking during an orientation and sensitisation programme for new students of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in Mando, Kaduna, for the 2025/2026 academic session, the EFCC boss, represented by Nana Fatima Abubakar of the Public Affairs Department, Kaduna Zonal Directorate, said there is no shortcut to wealth.
While stressing that the desire for quick wealth often leads to imprisonment, depression, loss of image and in some cases, untimely death, , Olukoyede identified peer pressure, greed, lack of patriotism and laziness as main drivers of cybercrime, bemoaning that many offenders now combine Internet fraud with drug abuse and fetish practices.
He urged youths to channel their creativity and digital skills and energies into legitimate online ventures and to support the fight against corruption by reporting fraudulent acts through the EFCC’s Eagle Eye App, which guarantees the anonymity of whistleblowers.
