THE member representing Anambra South in the National Assembly, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, is dead.
The Anambra State governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was reported to have died on Saturday morning, July 27, in a London hospital, where he was receiving treatment, after he travelled to the United Kingdom (UK) upon becoming seriously sick some weeks ago.
It was gathered that his condition became critical 48 hours prior to his death, even as the actual cause of death remained unclear at press time.
Ubah was elected senator in 2019 on the platform of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) and reelected on the same ticket last year, but he switched to APC early this year and has indicated interest to contest next year’s governorship election in Anambra State on the platform of the APC.
He was 52years old.
Recall that Ubah contested the 2021 governorship and returned fourth in the election won by the incumbent, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).
Ubah was an astute businessman, oil magnate and owner of Capital Oil, philanthropist, football club owner and former publisher of Authority newspaper.
Meanwhile, former President Goodluck Jonathan and foremost Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, have paid glowing tributes to the late President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who died on Thursday, July 25, after a brief illness, at the age of 82.
Jonathan, in a condolence message made public by his spokesman, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, to the entire Southeast, the government and people of Imo State and the deceased family, described Iwuanyanwu as a genial politician and successful businessman, who would be missed by many across the country.
Jonathan noted that the late publisher of Champion newspaper was a cultural enthusiast and a lover of his people who believed in equity and national unity.
On his part, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, expressed deep pain on hearing the news, noting that Iwuanyanwu’s death has left a void that would be felt across the country.
According to him: “On behalf of the Government and the people of Imo State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Iwuanyanwu family, the people of Ikeduru LGA, Imo State at large and Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
“I am deeply pained since learning of the passing of the revered elder statesman, Aha eji eje mba Ndigbo, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, after a brief illness. His departure leaves a void that will be profoundly felt across Imo State, Igboland and Nigeria at large.
“Iwuanyanwu was not only an eminent philanthropist and leader, but also a true nationalist whose contributions transcended ethnic boundaries.
“His tireless efforts towards national unity and peace were instrumental in ensuring that the government’s efforts in the restoration of peace materialised.
“He was a guiding light in turbulent times, providing wisdom and expertise that were indispensable. His dedication to the betterment of society and unwavering commitment to the Igbo cause has made Ndi Imo and the entire Igbo community immensely proud.”
Uzodimma said Iwuanyanwu’s legacy would continue to inspire and guide others in the quest for a peaceful and united Nigeria.
In its reaction, Afenifere, through its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Jare Ajayi, recalled the group’s interaction with the late business mogul, particularly since his emergence as Ohanaeze president general on April 20, last year.
“In the course of the interactions, within the context of South and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF), Iwuanyanwu’s love for his people and his patriotic zeal never failed to come out boldly.
“He was cerebral, especially when it comes to inter-cultural relationships. There is no doubt that Iwuanyanwu lived a meaningful life and left an indelible mark.”
