Assault: Court Grants Seun Kuti Bail, Orders Police To Conclude Investigations In 48 Hours

Published:

A YABA Magistrate Court in  Lagos on Tuesday, May 16 granted bail to Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, over an alleged assault of a police officer.

Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun, however, ordered his remand and the Police to complete their investigation within 48 hours.

Kuti was charged with assault on a Police officer, an offence contrary to Section 356 of the Criminal Code Act.

The Police prosecutor, S. A. Adebese, asked the court to remand the defendant for 21 days to allow the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to prepare legal advice.

However, Counsel to the defendant, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), opposed the motion and pleaded with the court not to remand his client, adding that he was not aware of an application to that effect.

Seun, who is the son of the Afro music legend, Fela Kuti, was invited and indeed appeared before the Lagos State Police Commissioner on Monday, following his alleged assault of a Police officer on duty at the Third Mainland Bridge on Saturday, May 13.

He was said to have slapped the officer after his vehicle was stopped.

He was later arrested and detained on the order of the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba.

He was later transferred to the state’s Criminal Investigation Department in Panti, Yaba, from where he was arraigned.
