THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced its decision to join the ongoing strike by the organised Labour, made up of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), following the failure of the repatriate committee, comprising the Federal Government , the Labour and Organised Private Sector (OPS) to reach an agreement on a new minimum wage.
Recall that while the Labour insists on over N400, 000 monthly minimum wage, the Federal Government and OPS offered N70,000, which the Labour has rejected, citing rising cost of leaving due to government’s policies, including removal of fuel subsidy, flotation of the Naira, hence its devaluation, and recent hike in electricity tariff.
In a statement on Monday, June 3, addressed to its branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators, ASUU’s President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, directed lecturers in universities across the country to join the strike as an affiliate of the congress.
According to the statement: “The NLC has declared an indefinite strike action beginning from Monday, June 3, 2024, as a result of the failure of government to conclude the renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal of hike in electricity tariff.
“Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate member of Congress.
“Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilise all members to participate in the strike action.”
