* Police Urges Calm

GUNMEN, on Monday, November 14, invaded Obudi Agwa community in Oguta Local Council of Imo State, killing five persons, including the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Ignatius Asor.

  It was gathered that some armed youths stormed the palace, where a dispute between locals were being settled and opened fire on the monarch.

  Apart from Asor, two palace chiefs and two other members of the community were also shot dead, while the traditional prime minister, Chief Stephen Ajoku, sustained gunshot injuries.

  The attackers later stormed a neighbouring  community, Mgbala, allegedly killing a pregnant woman and a local security officer.

  Recall that a few days earlier, soldiers and youths clashed in Izombe community in the same local council.

  Meanwhile, the state Police Command has called for calm. The Command’s spokesman, Mike Abatam, in a statement on Tuesday in Owerri, said:”Preliminary investigation reveals that hoodlums came in four vehicles and two motorcycles in company of a woman.

  “They also killed three other persons, including a member of a local vigilance group in the area.

  “The gunmen disguised themselves as persons in distress, pretending to report an emergency situation to the traditional ruler.”

  Abatam assured the community and the general public that investigation has began and the Command would leave no stone unturned until the perpetrators were arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law, adding: “The Police seek the support of members of the community to provide credible information or report any clandestine activities in their communities.”

  Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed security agencies in the state to investigate the dastardly act and ensure that the perpetrators face the full wrath of the law.

  While commiserating with family, friends, the Obudi-Agwa community and all those affected by the attacks, the President, in a statement signed his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Tuesday, November 15, prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured, just as he acknowledged the spirited efforts by the Imo State Government at improving the security situation and encourages all Imo residents to robustly support the collective efforts of state actors and members of the local community to keep everyone safe.
