*As NFF Opts For Foreign Technical Adviser
*Osimhen: I Have Lost Respect For Finidi Over Indiscipline Allegations
NIGERIAN Super Eagles’ head coach, Finidi George, has reportedly resigned from the position.
This came just two days after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced it was going to employ a foreign technical adviser.
He was reported to have forwarded his resignation letter to NFF President, Mr. Ibrahim Gusau, expressing disappointment that the NFF leadership met with the Minister of Sports, Mr. John Enoh, two days earlier without informing him that late report to camp by some players, as well as the fact that the football body itself did nothing to mobilise Nigerians in Cote d’Ivoire to troop out to support the Super Eagles in last match with Benin Republic on Monday, June 10, but rather blamed him for everything.
Recall that the NFF said it would employ an foreign technical adviser for the Eagles in the ‘coming weeks.’
The Federation, said in a communiqué issued on Thursday, June13, in Abuja after its executive committee meeting: “The executive committee resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
“Notwithstanding the challenges that attended the team’s preparations for the Day 3 and Day 4 games of the FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, owing to a 38-hour nationwide industrial action.
“The Board expressed displeasure with the poor attitude of some of the players to the national assignment and unanimously decided in favour of a more robust scouting programme of outstanding Nigeria-eligible players from across the four corners of the universe, who can add tremendous value to the nation’s flagship team.”
The NFF also apologised to Nigerians for the Super Eagles’ poor start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with a pledge to beef up the technical department.
It added: “The Executive Committee wholeheartedly apologised to Nigerians for the dismal output and subsequent very poor returns of the senior men national team, Super Eagles, in four out of 10 matches in the ongoing qualification series for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.
“The Committee resolved to beef up the NFF Technical Department with more qualitative hands. Equally, the Technical and Development Sub-Committee will be re-jigged with immediate effect.”
George had come under severe criticisms following the team’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in Uyo and 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in the World Cup qualifiers, leaving the team with just three points out of a potential 12.
Meanwhile, Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, has criticised George for accusing him of lacking commitment, deliberately refusing to play in the World Cup qualifier match and being above discipline.
George had been reported to have said that it was impossible to sanction some players who belonged to some “big men,” when he, along with NFF chieftains, met with the minister in Abuja to review the team’s poor campaign after the draw with South Africa before the loss to Benin Republic.
Osimhen was not available for the qualifiers, offering an official explanation that he was injured and sidelined for four weeks. But George said the Napoli striker could still have managed to play the matches.
However, Osimhen, visibly infuriated in an Instagram live video, lambasted the former coach, saying he has lost respect for the former Enyimba coach, while explaining that George was adequately briefed by him and his doctor.
The striker said: “I knew things like these would happen and that’s why I have the videos and screenshots of when I called Finidi while I was with the doctor in Germany.
“I got injured in our (Napoli’s) last game against Lecce and I went for an MRI scan. And I called Finidi there for him to listen to the doctor too.
“I called him (Finidi) and asked him to allow me to come to the camp to be with the boys and I spoke to some of my teammates too, but he said I have to be with my family.
“I’m not addressing anything, everybody knows I play my heart out whenever I’m playing for the club or national team. I’ll share the screenshot and videos of my conversation with Finidi for the sake of those believing what Finidi said.
“I’ve lost respect for that man, because before I disrespect anybody, I always respect them.”
