FORMER President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has warned that failure to address Nigeria’s rapidly growing population could portend consequences far greater than the current insecurity in the country, especially the Boko Haram menace.
Underscoring the potential for catastrophic social upheaval, he stressed that Nigeria must start planning how to provide this massive population with basic necessities like food and work, saying if this preparation fails, “Boko Haram of today will be a child’s play.”
Speaking at the inauguration of the Bakhita ICT Centre in Sokoto, the former head of state projected that by 2050, Nigeria’s population would have risen to approximately 400 million people, advising that the pathway to managing this growth and achieving global prominence lies in leveraging the country’s diversity, as well as good governance and inclusivity.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, appreciated Obasanjo’s commitment to promoting unity, urged Nigerians to unite to tackle security challenges, while the Sokoto State Government’s representative assured of the commitment to promoting technology education.
