THE Presidency has commended the Senate over its prompt screening and confirmation of the newly-appointed service chiefs.
The service chiefs were appointed by President Bola Tinubu, who, onTuesday, October 28, requested their confirmation by the chamber.
Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Basheer Lado, in a statement on Wednesday, October 29, said the exercise reflected the administration’s commitment to effective governance and national security.
“As the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, I facilitated this crucial interface to ensure a smooth and coordinated engagement between the Executive and Legislature, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to effective governance and national security.”
He described the appointments of Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS); Waidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff (COAS); Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff (CNS); and Sunday Aneke as Chief of Air Staff (CAS) as a “strategic step towards strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and fostering synergy among the armed forces.
“I extend my profound appreciation to the president of the senate, the senate leadership and distinguished senators for the prompt and thorough consideration that led to the confirmation of the new service chiefs,” he added.
Lado stated that the senate’s cooperation underscored the “strong collaboration between the executive and the legislature in advancing the national interest and ensuring the security and stability of our dear nation.”
Recall that the Senate confirms nomination of service chiefs on Wednesday after a two-hour closed-door session, where they were drilled on their plans to strengthen national security and reform the armed forces.
The senators requested to know their plans to strengthen intelligence coordination, modernise military operations and restore public trust in the armed forces.
Thereafter, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, put the question for their confirmation to a voice vote, which was unanimously approved by the chamber.
