RESIDENTS of Chiranchi in Dorayi Quarters, Gwale Local Council of Kano State Area are gradually coming to terms with gruesome killing of a housewife, Fatima Abubakar, 35, and her six children- Maimuna, 17; Aisha, 16; Bashir, 13; Abubakar, 10; Faruk, 7; and one-year-old Abdulsalam, in their home on Saturday, January 17.
On Monday, January 15, a neighbour, Bala Abubakar, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dorayi he heard frantic shouts and screams for help and quickly rushed outside, still wrapped in a towel, to disclover what was happening and joined other neighbours already gathered into the street.
Abubakar explained that the attackers used a sewing machine head to crush the skulls of the innocent children, killing them in cold blood and leaving them in a pool of blood.
Blood-stained clothes, two mobile phones belonging to the victims, a cutlass and a club were recovered from the suspects.
He stated: “When officers arrived, they moved swiftly, combing the premises and nearby areas.”
Bricklayers working on a nearby house were alerted by screams and quickly rushed to the scene, assisted by neighbours and virtually the community
According to Abubakar: “Everyone came out, we all rushed to help. The residents surrounded the building to prevent the attackers’ escape and alerted security agencies.
“They also reported hearing the victim’s distressed cries, including Fatima’s plea to Umar Auwalu, 23, her nephew, not to kill her.
“The Police arrived promptly, combed the premises and arrested three suspects, including Auwalu.”
He added that it soon became clear that the attackers had not been able to escape from the scene, but hiding within the compound; hence frantic efforts to apprehend them.
In the process, one suspect was discovered in a toilet and was arrested by security personnel, who believed he could lead them to others involved.
However, the efforts proved to have come a little too late for the victims, in view of the violent manner of the attack.
Their bodies were later evacuated to hospital.
Meanwhile, the Police have confirmed the arrest of three suspects during a sting operation between 10 pm on January 17 and 4 am on January 18, including Auwalu, who confessed to leading the attack.
The Kano State Government and security agencies investigations were still gathering to arrest all those involved, some of who may have even disguised as sympathisers and mingled with mourners at the funeral for the deceased in Dorayi, and have vowed to bring the perpetrators to book.
