LAGOS socialite and businessman, Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as ‘E-Money,’ said he will honour his pledge of N50million to social media comedian, Carter Efe, following his unanimous decision victory over street artiste and ZaZoo crooner, Habeeb Badmus, popularly known as Portable, at the ‘Chaos in the Ring 4’ event held on Friday night, May 1, at the Balmoral Hall of the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos.
E-Money reiterated his commitment after Balmoral Group Promotions chief executive, Ezekiel Adamu, enquiry at the end of the night, saying: “You know we put our money where our mouth is, and so congratulations Carter on your win. N50million for you.”
Adamu thereafter said the event had delivered on all its promises, noting: “We promised ‘Chaos in the Ring’ and we have delivered very entertaining fights tonight.
“There is more coming, thanks to everyone that made this a success and to the fighters for the great display.”
Portable suffered his first defeat in celebrity boxing as Efe outclassed him across three rounds to win by unanimous decision, with all three Judges scoring the bout 27-30 in favour of Efe, thereby stripping Portable of his status as celebrity boxing king.
The ZaZoo crooner, who had beaten Charles Okocha and Speed Darlington in previous bouts to claim two belts, had entered the ring with his characteristic swagger, promising to add a third title at Efe’s expense.
“I will use you to collect my third belt. Charles Okocha was bigger than you, Speed Darlington was bigger than you, and I beat them. I will beat you now,” he boasted before the fight.
The skit maker, on the other hand, remained unrattled, only responding: “One punch and you fall.” He lived up to he promise in the ring.
In the opening round, according to reports and video clips of the event, Portable came out aggressively, throwing wild, erratic punches in his trademark style, but the taller Efe absorbed the pressure and countered with crisp uppercuts and body punches that troubled the singer’s smaller frame.
Portable’s method did not change in the second round, as he continued to throw wild punches repeatedly, even as Efe grew sharper, landing more solid combinations.
The third round followed the same pattern, with Efe consistently finding his mark before the final bell and declaration of Efe as the new celebrity boxing champion.
The same night, Godday Appah was crowned the new WBO Africa cruiserweight champion after defeating Ezra Arenyeka by split decision, in the bout billed as a symbolic WBO Peace Fight between the Itsekiri and Ijaw communities of the Niger Delta.
Basit Adebayo claimed the WBO Africa title with a unanimous decision victory over former WABU champion, Loren Japhet.
In his post-match reaction during a live session on his Instagram page, Portable alleged foul play, insisting the match was unfairly officiated.
According to him: “I was robbed. Carter Efe was not professional enough. He was struggling with his long hands and height. I threw him many punches, why didn’t you people count them? Any blow that I threw at him ought to count even if it meets him on the shoulder or hand.
“And to the organisers, I want my stream money amounting to about N200million. Just give me my money before I cause trouble.
“They did ojoro for me. All of you are mad. Carter Efe was just holding my neck. I was punching him too, but you people are not talking about that. They knew he was tall and had long hands, but still put him in a boxing match with me.”
He, however, insisted that his personal life remained his greatest victory, disclosing that he had just welcomed a new baby boy.
“You can only buy a belt with money, but a child cannot be bought. You people cheated. They can’t pay the money amounting to the sum of N23billion. I thought I was going to dance with my belt, but I ended up with my new baby.
“My wife just gave birth to a bouncing baby boy. I value that more than a belt. You can buy the belt but not my child.”
