*Rewards Delta World Spelling Bee Championship Winning Student With N20m
DELTA State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the disbursement of financial assistance to 533 indigenes of the state who successfully graduated from the Nigerian Law School in the 2025 session, as part of efforts to support human capital development and ease the financial burden on young professionals.
The Delta State Bursary and Scholarship Board, which announced the approval in a public notice published, said the beneficiaries, all of whom are of the state origin, would receive the assistance following the governor’s approval.
The Board directed the affected graduates to submit the required documents electronically within one week, from July 23 to July 29, to facilitate the processing and disbursement of the funds.
The required documents include an admission letter to the Nigerian Law School; Certificate of Call to the Bar; a valid means of identification; local government identification; and bank account details.
It instructed beneficiaries to scan and forward the documents to its official email address, dsbb@deltastate.gov.ng, within the stipulated period.
The notice, signed by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Godfrey Enita, urged all eligible graduates to comply with the submission requirements to avoid delays in the processing of their financial assistance.
The Board advised beneficiaries seeking further clarification to contact its designated official, Otogie Godspower, on 07037429816.
In a related development, the governor rewarded Great Chinedu Okediashi with N20million for emerging winner of the World Spelling Bee Championship in China, describing the feat as a testament to the state’s sustained investment in education.
Oborevwori, who announced the reward on Friday, July 31, at Government House, Asaba, while receiving the championship trophy from Okediashi and officials of the Ministry of Secondary Education, said the victory reaffirmed that the state’s deliberate investments in education were yielding tangible results, stressing that education remained the greatest legacy parents and governments could bequeath to future generations.
The governor said while material wealth could be lost, education remains a lifelong asset that cannot be taken away; hence government’s heavy investment in education.
He stated that Delta had consistently distinguished itself in international academic competitions, recalling that it produced members of the Nigerian team that won the World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, last year.
Oborevwori lauded the winner’s parents for nurturing him and expressed disappointment that they were not present at the ceremony, saying they deserved equal recognition for the success recorded by their son.
He also commended Madonna International School for providing quality education and announced that, in addition to the N20million reward for the student, the state government would extend support to the school.
Earlier, Commissioner for Secondary Education, Kingsley Ashibuogwu, described the victory as a historic achievement not only for Delta State, but also for Nigeria and African.
Ashibuogwu said the victory marked the return of the prestigious trophy to Africa, noting that the student’s success was the culmination of years of determination and consistent support from the state government.
He said the governor’s financial and moral support throughout the competition encouraged the team to persevere until they eventually won the global title, even as he commended the governor for the massive investments in the education sector, particularly in improving teaching and learning across public schools in the state.
On his part, Okediashi thanked the governor for the support, pledging to continue working hard to bring more honours and international recognition to the state and Nigeria.
