THE Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has notified its members of a memorandum, dated July 13, issued by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, titled, ‘Prohibition of the Use of the Title, Barrister, as a Prefix to Names.’
According to the memorandum, issued on the directive of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), all litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars and lawyers appearing before the Supreme Court were directed to discontinue the use of the title, ‘barrister,’ as a prefix to their names in all official correspondence, court records, documents, identity materials and other official engagements within the apex court, with immediate effect.
A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the NBA, Bridget Ijeoma Edokwe, said: “Members of the Bar are hereby informed of the contents of the Memorandum and are advised to take due note of the directive, particularly in all official engagements and correspondence.”
