Subsidy Removal: NLC, TUC Suspend Planned Strike

Published:

THE Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) late on Monday, June 5, suspended its planned nationwide strike on Wednesday, June 7.

This was contained in a notice signed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, and the President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo.

The decision came after a six-hour meeting between the Federal Government and the organised labour at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The National Industrial Court (NIC) had some hours earlier restrained the Labour unions from embarking on strike, pending the hearing of a Motion on Notice in a suit filed by the Federal government against the planned action.

According to sources in the Presidency, the parties agreed that the NLC would suspend notice of strike immediately to enable further consultations, adding: “The TUC and the NLC to continue ongoing engagements with the Federal Government and secure closure on the resolutions.

“The labour centres and the Federal Government to meet on June 19, 2023 to agree on an implementation framework.”

The union had threatened to embark on the strike to protest the recent removal of fuel subsidy by the government.
