SENATE President, Godswill Akpabio, has commended the Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Samuel Ogbuku, for transforming the agency’s image and delivering what he described as a “new NDDC” for the region.
Akpabio said Ogbuku has done a very difficult job well, as it is not easy to manage the Niger Delta, nor is it is easy to manage the NDDC, adding, however: “But in two years, he has given the region a new story.
“This celebration is not about age; it is about God’s goodness to the Niger Delta through his leadership.”
Speaking in Abuja at Ogbuku’s 50th birthday celebration and book presentation, Akpabio declared that the NDDC boss would be remembered more for his enduring legacies than for his golden jubilee.
The senate president recalled NDDC’s past failures on critical projects, but lauded Ogbuku for restoring confidence in the interventionist agency, and its current Board as “the most peaceful and focused so far.”
President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, described Ogbuku as “a man of service, scholarship and achievement,” saying his milestone birthday was a reflection of his commitment to public good.
In an emotion-laden speech, Ogbuku recounted his difficult childhood, thanking mentors and colleagues who guided him from his days as a student activist to his present role and position, noting: “To serve my people at this level and to dream of a better Niger Delta is the greatest gift of my 50 years.”
The event also featured the unveiling of Ogbuku’s two books, Rethinking the Niger Delta and Strategies and Imperatives for Developing the Niger Delta.
