FOUR northern governors, all members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have been criticised over their alleged reaction to anti-Christian comments made by Islamic cleric, Yahya Jingir, who described Christians as infidels, claiming that Nigeria belongs to Muslims.
Jingir, who made the controversial comment during a mass wedding ceremony organised and sponsored by the Kano State Government for 1,500 couples, said he had no regrets supporting APC’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, arguing that the decision reflected the numerical dominance of Muslims in Nigeria, suggesting that Muslims were taking over Nigeria. A video of the event showed the cleric making the remarks in the presence of Governors Abba Yusuf of Kano; Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) and Dikko Umar Radda (Katsina), who looked indifferent, with some of them even cheering the cleric as he spoke. Recall that former minister of Aviation and Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, had expressed disappointment over the conduct of the governors, saying their reaction to the remarks was more disturbing to him than the cleric’s comments. “There is only one thing worse, and that saddened me more than what he said, and that is to have seen my friend and brother, the Governor of Kano State, cheering him on and celebrating it. “We will not keep quiet and watch our faith being dragged all over the floor because of politics.”
