Govt Holds Mass Burial For Delta Accident Victims, Amid Tears

Published:

TEARS flowed from families, friends and sympathisers as remains of victims of the fatal road accident that occurred along the Benin-Sapele-Ologbo Road in Oghara, Delta State, were interred at a mass burial organised by Ethiope West Local Government.
The victims, who were travelling in a 18-seater bus, lost their lives on May 25, last year, after the bus got trapped under a Dangote truck and sunsequently burst into flames, burning most of the occupants beyond recognition.
Their remains were buried at the Ethiope West Cemetery in Oghareki, after following a solemn ceremony attended by local government officials, Police officers, family members and sympathisers.
The local government’s Supervisor for Environment, Wisdom Gabriel, said the council received news of the accident on the morning after the incident and immediately swung into action, Chairman of the Council, Christian Onogba, directing that the remains be evacuated to a mortuary, while efforts were made through media announcements, to identify and locate the victims’ relatives.
Gabriel explained that despite these efforts, the severe burns sustained by the victims made identification impossible in many cases, leading to the decision to conduct a mass burial.
He conveyed the council chairman’s condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for peaceful repose of their souls.
Mourners called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, even as they condemned reckless driving by some truck drivers on the highways.
