WIFE of Nnamdi Kanu, detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, has denied reports that she has filed for divorce, describing the claims as false and unverified.
Okwu-Kanu, in a statement posted on her verified X handle on Friday, July 10, said her attention was drawn to the “false reports circulating online” that she had initiated divorce proceedings against her husband.
She stated: “For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” while expressing concern that people continued to “fabricate stories” about her family without verification, falsehoods she added “undermine responsible journalism.”
She urged the public to rely only on information from her directly or through her authorised representatives, even as she thanked those who reached out to confirm the story before sharing it.
The IPOB leader got married to Okwu-Kanu in 2009. He is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Custodial Centre, following his conviction on terrorism-related charges by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in November last year, who found guilty on all seven counts.
He filed a notice of appeal at the Court of Appeal on February 4, this year, seeking to overturn his conviction.
